Individual Details

Mary STEELE

(From 1760 to 1770 - 1864)

Her tombstone inscription states: Lady Frances Drummond Conner
1760-1864
Born-Drummond Castle, Scotland
It is not known when or by whom her tombstone was erected.

She was 99 in the 1860 census when she was living with her son Simon Conner in Montgomery Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. This tombstone is probably hers since her son Abner Conner and his wife are buried in Sardis Cemetery where her tombstone is located. However, the Lady Frances Drummond Conner, born Drummond Castle, Scotland is highly unlikely. She was a daughter of George and Margaret Steele in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. They were supposedly German.

The question that must be asked is where did this family story originate if it is not true. John and Mary (Steele) Conner's son John married Margaret Chapman. Her parents were Francis Chapman and Jane Drummond. I have seen her listed as Lady Jane Drummond. Francis Chapman (1771-1845) and Jane Drummond Chapman (1773-1845) are buried in East Union Presbyterian Cemetery, Dilltown, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. This is the the most likely source of the information on the tombstone. Later generations attributed this family information to Mary Steele Conner rather than Jane Drummond Chapman.
