Elia Helekunihi

(12 Apr 1839 - 15 Jun 1896)

LIFE
A. He had 11 children from his first wife. After she died, he remarried and had 6 more children. His first wife was "a skilled practitioner of the Hawaiian Medicinal healing arts with the use of plants.... he was able to write a manuscript titled Hawaiian Medical Practice" which was published September 1895 by Thomas Spencer. His second manuscript was a history of Hawaiian life. He had given it to Reverend Oliver Emerson to review, but the manuscript was not returned before he passed away. Helekunihi felt that his history filled in a little that might be lacking from the combination and John Ii and S. M. Kamakau's writings. Elia also wrote his genealogy entitled Ke Puke Kuauhau No Na Alii o Hawaii (Judge Elia Helekunihi, Hms G1.18).
B. He was appointed district judge of Haiku, Maui in 1894 and continued in that capacity until near his death (Judge Elia Helekunihi, Hms G1.18).
