Individual Details
Nahienaena
(1815 - 30 Dec 1836)
LIFE
A. "Her full name is Naahienaena (the raging fires), but history knows her more by the shortened version" (McKinzie, Hawaiian Genealogies, vol 2 p 71). She took the name Harriett when she was baptized a Christian in January, 1827 (Sinclair, Princess Nahienaena, p 15).
B. Birthdate Conflict: She was aboard a ship in Aug 1798 when she was "about fifteen years of age." (Extract of The Diary of Ebenezer Townsend, Jr., p 9).
Conflict: Thrum, Chronological Table of Important Events lists birthyear as 1816.
Conflict: Jarves, History of the Hawaiian or Sandwich Islands, p 205 estimated she was born about 1818.
C. She was not adopted as was the custom. She was raised by her mother Keopuolani (Kwan, et. al, Na Lani Kamehameha, p 15).
D. No children with Kahalaia (Descendants of Prince Keeaumoku I. Hms G65, Chart 8-A-2).
Conflict: It is unclear where the union of Kahalaia is sourced.
E. No children with her brother Kauikeaouli, with whom she had been groomed for a union following the ancient ways (Sinclair, Princess Nahienaena, p 14-15). Nahienaena and Kauikeaouli loved each other and it was natural for them to follow the Hawaiian custom of brother-sister pairing. However, the missionaries were against the custom, so Nahienaena and Kauikeaouli had to end their close relationship (Kwan, et al, Na Lani Kamehameha, p 15).
F. She married Leleiohoku on November 25, 1835 on Maui. She gave birth to a son on September 17, 1836 but the infant lived just a few hours. Her illness continued until her death on December 30, 1836 (Sinclair, Princess Nahienaena, p 25-26 and Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 340-341).
