Abraham Fornander

LIFE
A. He was "born in 1812 on the little island of Oland, off the east coast of Sweden." (Fornander, An Account of the Polynesian Race, p x-xi). He never remarried after Pinao died (Davis, Abraham Fornander: A Biography, p 123).
B. His father died when he was only ten years old.
He sailed from Sweden on a whaling ship in 1830. He married Pinao Alanakapu, from whom he learned to speak and write Hawaiian. "He carried on extensive correspondence with interested historians and scholars in the United States and Europe." (Fornander, An Account of the Polynesian Race, p x-xi). He never remarried after Pinao died (Davis, Abraham Fornander: A Biography, p 123).
B. He was appointed Circuit Judge of Maui in 1864 (The Honolulu Advertiser, 02 Nov 1887, p 2, Abraham Fornander. He Passes Away to His Long Rest Yesterday). "In the 1870's he was a Circuit Judge of the Kingdom of Hawaii for the Islands of Maui and Molokai.... In 1886 Fornander moved to Honolulu to become the Fourth Associate Justice of the Supreme Court." After his arrival he became ill and "died of cancer on November 1, 1887" (Fornander, An Account of the Polynesian Race, p ix-xii).
