C. He never knew his father because Hema went to Kahiki while Kahai was in his mother's womb (Kamakau, Tales and Traditions of the People of Old, p 94). After he had grown, he went in search of his father in Kahiki and found him dead; thereafter he returned to Maui (Kamakau, Tales and Traditions of the People of Old, p 141).
