Keoua Kuahuula

LIFE
A. Twin with Keoua Pee-ale (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 120).
B. Chief of Kau, Hawaii (Fornander, An Account of the Polynesian Race, vol 2 p 228). Maintained 9-year war with Kamehameha I. In a battle following the death of Kalaniopuu, Keoua Kuahuula gained ruled over Kau and Puna, Keawemauhili over Hilo and half of Puna and Hamakua, while Kamehameha ruled Kona, Kohala, and half of Hamakua (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 122). Keoua killed Keawemauhili for fear he would join with Kamehameha against him (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 151).
C. Assumed leadership of Kiwalao's army when Kiwalao died (Pratt, Keoua: Father of Kings, p 24).
D. Order of mates (McKinzie, Hawaiian Genealogies, vol 2 p 110-112).
E. Assassinated by Keeaumoku (Kalakaua, The Legends and Myths of Hawaii, p 367). Kamehameha might not have otherwise killed him in battle because he loved Keoua (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 157).
Conflict: Forbes, A Chronological Table of Remarkable Events; Ka Nupepa Kuokoa, 13 July 1865, p 4, Ka papa kuhikuhi makahiki o na mea Kaulana o Hawaii nei! (Kamakau); Chronology- 1784-1859 and 1555-1730, G1.4; and Thrum, Chronological Table of Important Events list death year as 1792; Hopkins, Hawaii: The Past, Present, and Future of It's Island-Kingdom, p 151 states 1793. But according to Kuykendall, The Hawaiian Kingdom, vol 1 p 37 the date of the events of Keoua's assassination - naval battle in Spring 1791 and completion of Kawaihae heiau in Summer - are certain. Therefore, Keoua's assassination was done in 1791.
F. Contemporaries in late 1700s: Kamehameha and cousin King Kiwalao, cousin Keoua (half-brother of Kiwalo) and uncle Keawemauhili (brother to Kalaniopuu), Kona chief Kekuhaupio, Keeaumoku, Kameeiamoku. (Emerson, Mamala-Hoa, p 16-17).
