LIFE
A. Birth year 1688 estimated as 91 years from his death year (see Fornander, Story of Kahahana, p 15).
Conflict: Kamakau, Ka papa kuhikuhi makahiki o na mea Kaulana o Hawaii nei! list birth year as 1664.
B. Succeeded his nephew as ruler of Oahu (Fornander, An Account of the Polynesian Race, vol 2 p 289). Became ruler after the death of his older brother Kapiiohookalain in 1736 (Kamakau, Tales and Traditions of the People of Old, p 16). He was ruler of Oahu when Captain Cook arrived in 1778 (Dibble, History of the Sandwich Islands, p 51). King of Oahu in 1779 (Bingham, A Residence of Twenty-one Years in the Sandwich Islands, p xvi).
C. "restless and warlike prince" who came to the aid of Kauhiaimokuakama to defend Maui from Alapainui (of Hawaii) and Kamehamehanui, Kauhi's brother. About 1738 (Fornander, An Account of the Polynesian Race, vol 2 p 289). His war canoes held 120 men - canoes made of wood and joined together with coconut husks (Kamakau, Tales and Traditions of the People of Old, p 117-118).
D. Sovereign of the western portion of Kauai (Fornander, An Account of the Polynesian Race, vol 1 p 139). When Alapai invaded Oahu after conquering Oahu's invading army on Molokai, the remaining chiefs on Oahu asked for help from Peleioholani. Chief Naili brokered peace between the Oahu-Kauai forces and the Mokokai-Maui-Hawaii forces in January 1737 (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 71-72).
E. Reminiscences "describe him as proud, arrogant, overbearing" (Fornander, Story of Kahahana. , p 15). He slaughtered the Molokai chiefs and attacked the commoners in revenge for the killing of his daughter (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 232).
F. Death date estimated by Stokes as 1779.
Conflict: Fornander, An Account of the Polynesian Race, vol 2 p 73,290 and Kamakau, Tales and Traditions of the People of Old, p 117 approximate a death date of 1770. However, other authors, including eye witnesses found him to be alive in 1779.
