Alfred Leonard Skovly

Alfred Leonard Skovly was born May 30, 1912, in Norden Township, Deuel County, SD, the son of Martin and Lovisa Berger Skovly. He was baptized in the New Trinity Evangelical Church near Canby, MN and confirmed at Wood Lake Lutheran Church near Astoria.
He married Beulah Pederson on December 10, 1938, and they farmed near Astoria until 1975, when they retired and moved to Hendricks, MN. Alfred was also a seed corn salesman for many years.
While they lived on the farm, he was active in the Crop Improvement Association and many community and church organizations in Astoria. He enjoyed baseball, playing cards, hunting and rodeos.
After retiring, he joined the Kiwanis Club in Hendricks, Aid Association for Lutherans, and the Sons of Norway. He and Beulah traveled to Norway several times, as well as other countries. He died January 2, 2001, at the Hendricks Nursing Home.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 6, 2001 at Christ Lutheran Church in Hendricks, MN with Pastor Baun officiating. Burial was in the Hendricks cemetery. Pallbearers were his grandsons: Dale, Gail, Kenny and Todd Johnson, Duane and Bryan Clauson, Ronnie and Marty Skovly, and Ryan Squires. Honorary pallbearers were his granddaughters: Debbie Lewis, Diane Holloway, Linda Rich, Laurie Cervone, Shelly Nikolas, and Jolene Barnett.
Soloist was Duane Hogie and organist was Julie Hogie. Grandchildren Linda Rich and Bryan Clauson shared memories of their grandfather.
He is survived by four children: Beverly (Mrs. Melvin) Johnson, of Astoria, SD; Louise (Mrs. Leon) Gadbois, of Holyoke, MA; Leonard Skovly and his wife, Glenda, of Estelline, SD; and Helen (Mrs. Roger) Squires of Hayti, SD; 15 grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren; one sister, Myrtle Pederson of Huntington Beach, CA, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah, his parents, step-mother, Carrie Skovly, brother Albert, and sisters: Clarice Olson, Ethel Almos and Karen Moen, and a great-grandson, Thomas Cervone.
