Warren Donald Smedsrud

Warren D. Smedsrud was born September 9, 1920, to Melvin and Ethel (Palmer) Smedsrud on the family farm near Tyler, Minnesota. He died Monday, July 16,2001, at Dakota Sun Assisted Living Center in Volga.
Warren was the oldest of nine children. At age nine he went with his Grandpa Palmer by train to the Gillette Children's Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he stayed for several months for surgery on a clubfoot. At age 13, he went to live with Peter and Susan Boemke on a farm in west Sioux Falls. He was confirmed at First Lutheran in Sioux Falls and graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls. As a young man he enjoyed playing drums with a dance band. Warren loved all music and especially enjoyed listening to Lawrence Welk. He also enjoyed playing his harmonica for friends.
On October 21, 1945, he married Elnora Lovro at East Side Lutheran in Sioux Falls. Together they enjoyed dancing, fishing, playing cards, and visiting with family and friends. Elnora passed away on August 26, 1995.
Warren was a farmer all his life. He enjoyed planting and harvesting the crops each year and milking Holstein cows. He farmed for 24 years on a farm near Garretson, South Dakota, and then moved to a farm near Volga in 1976, where he farmed with his son, Wayne. He moved to Dakota Sun Assisted Living Center in November 2000.
Warren will be missed by two children: Brenda Hayne and her husband Jack, and Wayne Smedsrud and his wife Joan, all of Volga; five grandchildren: Ellen Dulas and husband Dave of Pierre, Christopher Hayne of Volga, Paul Smedsrud and his wife Jennifer of Brandon, Sara Smedsrud of Seattle, Washington, and Jeffrey Hayne of Simi Valley, California; two great-grandsons, Steven Hayne and Matthew Dulas; a brother, Stan Smedsrud and his wife Lorraine of Fargo, North Dakota; two sisters: Phyllis Karbo of Sioux Falls and Deanna Buchert of Russell, Minnesota; three sisters-in-law: Arlene Smedsrud and Grace Schaefer of Sioux Falls, and Jeanette Carlson and her husband Don of Dallas, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
