Obituary from the Hendricks Pioneer:
EDWARD SOMMERVOLD FUNERAL RITES MARCH 25
Edward O. Sommervold, another pioneer of this community, passed away at the Hendricks Hospital March 21, 1942.
Born of the parents Ole Evenson and wife, Marit Auni, of Storin, Norway, on October 9th, 1867, in Winneshiek County, Iowa, he had attained the age of 74 years, five months and 12 days.
At the age of nine years, he came with his parents to Lincoln county, Minnesota, and settled near Hendricks, where the family made their home.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
On July 6th, 1889, he was united in marriage to Gallaug Sagmoe, who preceded him in death a number of years ago. This union was blessed with four children: Oliver, who died in infancy; another son given the same name, Oliver, who resides at Toronto, SD; Mary (Mrs. Gilmore) Johnson, of Hendricks; and Bernt, who died on March 24th, 1934. Lars, a step-son, died a week later. Hannah, a stepdaughter, and Edwin, a grandson, were living with him at the time of his passing, Edwin now being in the Army service.
The deceased had three brothers and three sisters: Hans, Henry and John, Gertrude (Mrs. A.) Hexum, Gallaug (Mrs. Ole) Olsen and Beret (Mrs. E. O.) Morseth of Cyrus, Minn. Mrs. Morseth and Henry are the only two surviving. Sixteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren mourn the death of grandpa.
Mr. Sommervold was a long-time resident of this community, engaged in farming, and upon his retiring, moved to Hendricks, where he now lived when life's journey ended. It can truthfully be said that he was a kind husband and father. Death comes to all of us sooner or later, let us therefore so live that we may enter into His Glory, where He has promised that sickness and death shall not enter.
Blessed be his memory.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon, March 25 from the home of Mrs. Clara Sommervold at 1:30 and at the Lutheran Free Church at two o'clock with Rev. M. A. Ericksen conducting the last rites.
At the services in the church the choir sang three songs: "Face to Face", "I Know of a Sleep in Jesus' Name", and "Den Store Hvide Flok". Mrs. M.A. Ericksen sang a song at the house.
The pallbearers were Ole Ness, Ole Ruttum, Christ Pederson, Pete Hinsverk, Pete Aune and Lars Thoreson. Interment was made in the East Cemetery.
