Biography of Cora Winsness

Cora June Winsness was born on June 29, 1914 on the farm in Cathy, ND. She attended school in a one room schoolhouse a few miles from the farm. She graduated from high school in 1932. She spent her growing up years on the farm helping her mother cook and manage the house for the hired hands and thrashing crews. After she graduated from high school, she worked in Fessenden, ND. I don’t know what kind of work she did, but the money she made was used to help pay for her brother John’s college education. Somewhere between 1934 and 1938 she attended a business school in Fargo, ND where she learned secretarial skills. She did not want to stay on the farm. In 1939, she left ND to work in Philadelphia, PA as a secretary for the Social Security Administration.. Her brother, John and his wife Peg were living there. Cora lived in an apartment with another woman from ND in Upper Darby, PA. She would take the elevated train to Philadelphia to get to work. She and her roommate loved to dance, and at that time, young people would go to “mixers”, listen to music and dance. It was at one of these dances that she met our father, Charles Matthews. The year was probably 1942. They continued to date until deciding to marry May 13, 1944 in Fessenden, ND.
After the wedding, Charles, who had enlisted in the United States Army in 1943 had to return to duty in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Cora followed him there and to the other Army Air Bases in Louisiana, Florida, and North Carolina until Dad’s discharge from the Army on Feb. 14, 1946 at Fort Dix, NJ.
Cora was a homemaker. Cora loved playing bridge, working in the garden, was a good bowler, enjoyed making stained glass projects, sewed her own clothes and loved to bake Norwegian cookies. She also loved to work with wood and made a curio cabinet for her tea cups. Her daughter has this curio cabinet now.
