Mayme Erickson

Mayme was a school teacher in a country school near Hendricks. After Charles was born, she retired from teaching. Mayme wrote many poems, sewed many, many quilts for the Church to send to countries and peoples who needed them. She like family genealogy. She gathered the information from descendants of the immigrants to the South Lake Hendricks area. The book is titled "Our Journey Back". It is still available from her son Charles Nygaard in Hendricks. Many people from Norway have purchased the book.

Mayme loved music and played the piano and organ.

Obituary:
Mayme Arlene Erickson Nygaard was born March 4, 1926 in Brookings County, South Dakota to Alfred and Gina (Hexem) Erickson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Hendricks. She attended rural school in Brookings County and graduated from Hendricks High School in 1943. She attended Eastern State Normal School at Madison, S.D. and Taught in rural schools for seven years near White, Brookings and Hendricks. She also worked at the Hendricks Community Hospital and Homes as a nurses aide and physical therapy aide. July 22, 1950, she married Clarence Nygaard. The couple lived on the Nygaard farm in Lincoln Co. until 1974 when they purchased a home in Hendricks. Mayme passed away March 9, 1993. Clarence preceded her in death on November 10, 1990. Mayme was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and was active as a member in the WELCA, church choir, Sunday school and circles. Her hobbies were sewing and quilting. Survivors are her son, Charles, grandsons Matthew, David and Jonathon; brothers Philmon and Donald, all of Hendricks. She was also preceded in death by her parents.
