Marit Jonsdatter Rosbjorgen

(8 Feb 1861 - 1930)

Marit came to America from Norway in 1878 with her Mother, Father and seven brothers and sisters.

From Kenneth Lien we have insight to the naes of Marit and her parents:
"Another example of name changes is in the decendents of Anders Ingebrigtsen Rognes. Our document states that he married Marit Jonsdatter Rosbjorgen which is her Norwegian name in the Støren Book. But the Rosbjorgen farm ceased to exist after about 1874 when the Røros rail line from Trondheim to Røros thru Singsaas took most of the farm for the rail line. Legend has it that the tracks go thru right where the house once stood. So, they lived on a different farm when they came to America and had a different answer when immigration asked them what the last farm they were on was. In America, she was known as Marit Rogness both before and after her marriage. And her parents who are listed and Jon and Anne Rosbjorgen were known as John and Anne Rogness in America and that is the name you will find on their tombstone in Singsaas Cemetery. Rogness sometimes is found with one 's' and sometimes with 2."
Marit was known to her descendants in America as Marit Sagoien. Her birth name was Rosbjorgen as found in the Storen books, however, she lived at the farm/house named Sagoya and that was the name she took in America.

From Gudbrand Rognes:
Anders Ingebrigtsen b. march 1847, married Marit Jonsdatter Rosbjorgen. K.
Lien writes that she came from a farm called Rosbjorgen.
My version is as follows:
Marits father Jon came from Litjvollen, same place as Jonetta mentioned
earlier. Her father Jon had a very small farm (only 2 cows and 8 sheep in
1875, almost like a husmannsplass as Litjvollen) close to Gaula called
Sagøien, earlier a part of Rosbjorgen.(means approx: "saw mill close to
water")
Norwegian census 1875 shows that Marit stays with her uncle at Litjvolden,
that's what i think is the reason why she was called Rognes when
immigrating to the US:
Her parents are in the same census still at Sagøien, with their 5 kids.
But since her father Jon was born Rognes, as son of husmann Ole Olsen
Rognes - it could be naturally for him to keep the Rognesname and not
Rosbjorgen which he had used only for a shorter period?
