OBITUARY
On Friday morning, February 19, 1937, death ended the life of Svend J. Moen, who had been ill for about eleven days.
Mr. Moen was born in Budalen, Norway on August 15, 1864 of the parents John and Ingeborg Moen. He immigrated to America at the age of 16 together with his sister. His mother and brothers came to this country earlier. He made his first home here with his uncle, Jens Hanson, after which he lived with his mother in a sod hut on the land adjoining the present homestead. Here also lived three brothers, Lars, Hans and Peder, deceased, and Jonetta, now Mrs. P. Kjelden.
Mr. Moen sought an opportunity to acquire an education but his school days In America were few. Only 11 days in all.
His ambition was to make a home for himself. He settled on the homestead three miles south and two miles west of Hendricks here he lived continually until his death last Friday.
On December 20. 1893. Mr. Moen was united In marriage to Ingeborg Lille-Fjeseth. To this union eleven children were born, of whom eight are living.
They are: John, of Bercsford; Ida (Mrs. O. E. Ronnlng). of Sioux Falls: Carl, of Brookings: Joseph, Malvln, Peder, Almer, and Hllma. of Hendricks. The three named last have lived at home to care for their father in his last days.
Besides the children. Mr. Moen leaves to mourn his demise, one sister. Mrs. Joneita Kjelden of Hendicks and ten grandchildren, who all cherish the memory of a kind and loving father and grandfather.
Mr. Moen spent his life unselfishly, giving his time and effort unstintlngly to the welfare and comfort of others. Especially to his family, of whom he thought up to the hour of death. Through joy and sorrow he remained cheerful and optimistic, always looking to his Saviour for strength and aid. This faith in hls Redeemer he kept until the angel of death called him home.
On May 16, 1914 he mourned the death of his beloved companion, who passed away suddenly after having stood by his side for 21 years.
Funeral services were conducted from the Singsans Lutheran church on Monday, with Rev. P. I.. Mork officiating. Interment was made In the Singsaas cemetery with Arnt and Carl Hanson, Pete Kjelden, Peter Bogen, Hans Foraeth and Jay Bogen as pallbearers. The flower bearers were Llllle and Ruby Bogen and Gena Hexem.
Memorial gifts to the various missions totaled $54.
Father, we bid thee farewell:
Your earthly life Is o'er.
When resurrection morning dawns
We meet again on yonder shore.

Farewell Father

The other evening as we were playing school, Gracie being teacher. I received the sad news that Father had passed away. Only a week previous I talked to him. He was then, it seemed, rallying from a serious Illness. But Father's days were numbered and he was called home to his Saviour whom he had learned to know and love. That assurance gives comfort In the hour of sorrow.
Father is gone. There is another vacant chair. But he still lives In our memory. We shall
never forget his undaunted courage, his cheerful disposition and the kindness and thoughtfulness which he always showed us.
Space will not permit me to recall incidents from the life of Father. But I wish to mention his conversion, which occurred in the winter of 1908. Father was happy beyond description. He had found a priceless treasure, this Saviour who died for him.
He would stop In the midst of work and kneel In prayer. His Bible became dear to him and he read It often. In later years when he retired from farm work he spent much time in meditating upon God's word, as well as Christian literature.
Death has entered my boyhood home a few times, saddening Father's heart. Especially
did sorrow weigh heavily on Father when Mother passed away so suddenly. I realized this sorrow last winter when my companion left me with three youngsters who now lean on their dad for help.
Father's loll and sorrows are over. He has entered the land where the sun never sets and
tears never flow. Some day we hope to meet again. Glorious hope!
Father's life was not always rosy, but he endeavored to drop a rose here and there on the
path of others. We are grateful lo God for the gift of a faithful, loving father. Blessed be
his memory.
John Moen.
