In response to questions concerning Nils, the following was received from Jens Winsnes in Norway:

I'm sorry to say that I can't provide too much more information about Nils Bogen. According to Singsåsboka, Nils' grandfather apparently committed suicide by throwing himself into the river (Gaula) because he didn't get along with Nils' father's coming wife. They were both supposed to be very hot-headed and stubborn. I guess that could be seen as circumstantial evidence supporting the fact that Nils acted somewhat strangely after his arrival in the US...

Nils is also reported as living in Romsdalen at the time of his emigration, which is quite far from Singsås. This also seems to prove him being a bit of a wanderer even before travelling across the Atlantic...

His destination in the US was stated to be Lansing (Mich?), and he was registered in the records in Trondheim April 8th 1870. He probably left Trondheim April 9th. Should also be easy to find out what ship he was on...

Nils came from what was traditionally one of Singsås' most prosperous farms, but it seems that it was rapidly deteriorating throughout the last part of the 19th century, until it was eventually sold out of the family in 1900...

My second cousin is the current owner of the farm Nils came from :-)

Greetings
Jens

From Gudbrand Rognes (Norway):
"As young men Nils and his brother Ole left Sørstuen Bogen in lower
Singsås, and were among the first farmers near Hendricks. Many from
Singsaas travelled in the same period. I can mention the brothers Ole and
Nils Troøien, Nils P. Foros (Winsness) and his sisters son Peder E.
Kosberg. Mother of the Bogenbrothers, father of the Troøienbrothers and
mother of Nils Foros were from Nordgaarden Osøyen og and were sibblings?
Nils Rognes from Støren married a widow in Osøien, grandmother of the 5
last mentioned. He appreciated that her family named children after him,
and promised a gift for christenings - the value of a cow to all within
the family who was named after him. That's how it became Nils Bogen, Nils
Troøien and Nils Foros."

Best regards
Gudbrand
