== Biography ==
Captain Joseph Andrews was a house carpenter by trade. On 22 March 1690 Joseph was made a freeman. He was also very active in town affairs having served several terms as assessor, town surveyor, selectman, constable, on a committee to select a site for the church, as well as the church building committee. In 1700 he was selected as part of a committee of 5 men to act on behalf of the town of Boxford to negotiate with those of Topsfield:
::"''The Town Choes 5 men to discoarse with Topsfield Conservning a divisanel lien betwixt topsfield and Boxford and to see how near we Caen Come to Gathe if it might bee to prevent forther trubbell; the names of the men wee have Chose to doe this sarvis bee John Andrus Josaph Andrus Sargent Josaph Bixbee Corperal Thomas Perley and John Pebody.''"
He and his family lived in Boxford, Massachusetts until 1705, then they removed to Salem Village where he lived the remainder of his life.
Joseph was against the Salem Witch Trials and signed a petition in favor of [[Proctor-736|John Proctor]], and his wife, [[Bassett-1100|Elizabeth]], who were both accused of witchcraft. Juliet Porter. ''A Porter Pedigree, Ancestors and Descendants of Samuel and Martha (Perley) Porter,'' Worcester, Massachusetts, 1907, pgs. 48, 83, 95-6 John Proctor was hanged, but Elizabeth was spared because she was pregnant. By the time she gave birth the hysteria was over.

Joseph was born on 18 September 1657, Topsfield, Essex, Massachusetts when his parents were both in their 40's. He was christened the following day, also in Topsfield.
