He inherited the homestead, and the house was still standing in 1882, when it was destroyed by fire. It is now known as the Peterson farm, and was divided between his two sons, Joseph and John. His will was made May 8, 1722, and proved July 16, of the same year. His son David, who was the executor, was given the lands on the south side of the river and on the eastern side of Nichols brook. He married, January 23, 1688, Susanna Town, born in Topsfield, Massachusetts, December 24, 1671, died September 13, 1766, daughter of Joseph and Pheobe (Perkins) Town. They had children: 1. Joseph, baptized January 26, 1689-90. 2. John, baptized July 12, 1692. 3. Isaac, born December 25, 1695. 4. David, see forward. 5. Mary, born May 13, 1700; married Nathaniel Hutchinson. 6. I, 1693-4, of Grace Andrews, his grandmother, widow of Robert, for ?60, 80 acres swamp and meadows, south side of Ipswich River 'second division,' bounded by Porter, Ipswich river, William Town and William Perkins. His father in 1718, deeded his homestead to him. He was then dwelling on the tract first mentioned. In his will, after giving to Susanna her thirds of lands on the south side of the river, he divided the farm his father gave him between his sons, Joseph and John, partly in Topsfield and partly in Ipswich, north side of the river; to his son, David, who was executor, all his lands on the south side of the river and the east side of Nichols' brook, and a small piece of meadow on the west side of that brook; to his youngest sons, Stebbings and Samuel, 'all the rest of my lands and meadows on the west side of said brook to the river.' 9. JOHN CUMMINGS, (Isaac) b. in Topsfield, June 7, '666, m. Jan. 23, 1688, Susannah, dau. of Joseph and Phebe (Perkins) Towne. She was b. Dec. 24, 1670, d. Sept. 13, 1766. He executed a will May 8, 1722, which was proved July 16, 1722. He received from his father by will dated May 8, 1722, 100 A. of land, now known
as the "Hobbs-Bell" farm, and 50 A. of land on the south side of the river, "where my son John now dwells." As early as 1694 he began buying land on the south side of the river, until he finally owned over 200 A's. He was living in that part of the town as early as 1714 and probably much earlier. He lived in the old house that stood until its destruction by fire in 1882, on what is now known as the Peterson farm. He held several town offices.
