Lewis dropped the "Van" in Van Buskirk changing the surname to Buskirk. However, he occasionally continued use of the Van Buskirk spelling in Ohio Co., VA in 1786 and Bourbon Co., KY in 1795 where the name appears on land deeds and in Adams County, Illinois when he patented land.
He was born 1760 in New Jersey, a son of Lawrence ("Laurens") Van Buskirk and Rebecca Cammel, although Family Search shows her name was Rebecca Piers.
Lewis Taylor Van Buskirk served as a private on several occasions during the Revolutionary War. Between September 1776-1 January 1777 he served in Capt. Thos. Gaddis Co. of the Virginia Militia in the District of West Augusta, Virginia. In his pension application, Lewis declared he was born in 1760 in NJ, and was a spy in 1776 along the river between Pittsburg and Wheeling for five months. At the time of entering service he resided on or near the line between PA and VA in Washington County, Pennsylvania. He also served in 1777 and 1778 for two years under Capt Ogle at Beach Bottom Fort. The information on the pension application was verified by military records, however, his pension request was denied because there was no one to vouch for his service at the time of application in 1834.
He was living in Bourbon County, (then Virginia, now Kentucky) in 1789 when his name appeared on the tax list. The Tax Year Book of Bourbon County 1789 [http://bourboncoky.info/files/Patrick%20Linn%20-%20appears%20on%201789%20Tax%20List%20Bourbon%20Co.,%20KY.pdf]He remained in Bourbon County, Kentucky and his name appears on tax lists as late as 1803. He is next glimpsed on the 1806 for Delinquent Tax List for Pendleton County, Kentucky which shows Lewis Buskirk had moved to Ohio.Delinquent Property Rolls of Pendleton County, Kentucky. Transcribed by Eric C. Nagle from the original rolls at the Kentucky Dept. for Libraries and Archives at Frankfort, Ky.[http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ky/state/counties/pendleton/taxrec/deltaxeric.htm]
His first wife was named Martha, last name unknown. She died before 1810. It is not clear whether this was in Kentucky or during Lewis' brief sojourn in Ohio. Lewis Buskirk was enumerated on the 1810 census for Pendleton County, Kentucky but the household does not show a female in the age category to be his wife.US Census 1810; Pendleton, Kentucky; Roll: 8; Page: 113; Image: 00105; Family History Library Film: 0181353.

Defendants acknowledge their debt of $100.25.
About 1825 he was living in Shelby County, Indiana. An early history of that county provides an entertaining anecdote about Lewis Buskirk purchasing a horse in Lebanon, Ohio and when he brought it to his home in Indiana the horse ran away, back to its former owners. Lewis pursued it alone and on foot. When he had been gone for more than three days his friends and neighbors became concerned and set out to find him. They even went so far as to accuse a nearby Indian tribe of murdering him. The Indians, deeply offended (and wrongly accused), packed up and moved west never to be seen again. In the meantime Lewis Buskirk returned home none the worse for his journey and presumably with the runaway horse. He purchased 80 acres in Adams County, Illinois from the US government (17 Oct 1835) but did not receive the patent for it until after his death.
