: In 1246-47 he granted his message in the parish of St. Michael of Paternostercherche to John de Gisorz, citizen of London, for £60 and a cask of wine. In 1253 he witnessed a sentence of excommunication and anathema against violators of the liberties of the church.}
: He was at the side of Edward I at the siege of Caerlaverock and later participated in the Crusade of 1248-1254. He was knighted at Gloucester in the 17th year of King Henry III. In 1245 his mother Isabel died, and Hugh gave security for payment of his relief (100 pounds), and successfully sued his livery, gaining the lands of his inheritance.}
: Hugh was one of the subscribing barons to the letter transmitted to the Pope, complaining of the exactions of his holiness upon this realm. He attended the parliament (32 Henry III) where the king was criticized for outrageous expenditures, and told that neither his treasurer nor chancellor had the confidence of the lords.}
: Hugh founded several hospitals and almshouses and did a lot for the poor on his manor in Hedingham. He also built the steeple of Earls Colne church.}

: Hugh died before 23 Dec. 1263. His widow Hawise, died after 1263 on 03 February. They were buried at Earls Colne.

===Burial===Richardson states in Royal Ancestry that Hugh de Vere and his wife Hawise were both buried at Earls Colne (Colne Priory). But long ago the de Vere tombs were moved to St. Stephen's Chapel in Bures, Suffolk, a few miles northeast of Earls Colne. On February 29, 2008 Alton Rogers received an e-mail for Robin King, Rector of Bures Parish Church (ricking@hotmail.co.uk) who stated "de Vere family memorials (tombs) are in St. Stephens Church, a mile from the centre of Bures village."
