According to the Pettus pedigree published by Blomefield (1775), his mother's name was Cecilia, although in the parish register of St Simon and St Jude, Norwich, Norfolk (the Pettus' church in Norwich) it is given as Cicely. Collins (1741), Wotton (1741) and Burke & Burke (1844), assert that father John Pettus married the widow of Simon Dethick, esq.
