== Biography ==Henry, 1st Lord Scrope of Masham (29 Sep 1312 Masham - 31 Jul 1392bur. Coverham Abbey, YKS), was the eldest son of Geoffrey Le Scrope of Masham. Henry spent much of his life in battle, and figured prominently in all the wars of Edward III. He was knighted in 1333 at Berwick, Scotland where he fought in the Battle of Halidon Hill. In 1335 he was in Scotland, and in 1340 at the Battle of Sluys. He spent time in Brittany in 1342 at the sieges of Vannes and Morlaix and again in Flanders in 1345 and in 1346 where he fought at Crécy and the Battle of Nevilles Cross. In 1347 he was at the Siege of Calais and in 1350 he fought in the battle of Winchelsea.
He was given a brief period of rest from war to serve in the House of Lords where he was called in 1350 to serve as Lord Scrope of Masham.
Subsequent to Henry's being summoned to parliament as Baron Scrope of Masham, this branch of the family became known as the Scropes of Masham, Upsall, and Flaxtead. Under John of Gaunt he was appointed Warden of Calais and Guînes from 1361-1370. In 1371 he was appointed as Warden of the Western Marshes and as Steward of the King. In 1377 he obtained license to settle the manor of Fyfield, Essex on his son John and his heirs. Henry died in 1392. Henry Scrope was an honorable and notable character of his time.

In 1377 he obtained license to settle the manor of Fyfield, Essex on his son John and his heirs. Henry died in 1392. Henry Scrope was an honorable and notable character of his time.
