Geoffrey Scrope

(Abt 1280 - Abt 2 Dec 1340)

} == Biography == Geoffrey was born in 1281. He was the son of [[Le Scrope-142|William Le Scrope]] and [[De Newsom-10|Constance De Newsom]]. He passed away in 1340. "Geoffrey is first referred to in a legal context in 1306, when he was appointed attorney to Thomas Meynill. He became a serjeant at Michaelmas 1309, and about Easter 1315 he was appointed one of the king's serjeants. From 1317 he was regularly summoned to councils and parliaments among the justices. "Geoffrey Scrope made a number of grants to religious houses. He gave a messuage in York to Fountains Abbey in 1318, rights to fishing and wood and the advowson of the church in Wharram Percy to Haltemprice Abbey in 1327, and a further grant of moorland to Haltemprice in 1331. In 1329 he endowed a chantry at Patrick Brompton for the souls of himself and his wife; her name was Ivetta, and it is likely, though incapable of conclusive demonstration, that she was the daughter of William Roos of Ingmanthorpe, and that she predeceased her husband. They had five sons, of whom the eldest, Henry Scrope (1312? 1392), became first Lord Scrope of Masham. Of their other sons, Geoffrey became a canon of Lincoln Cathedral, and William was active as a soldier in France, but little is recorded of Thomas and Stephen. Their daughters, Beatrice and Constance, married into the Luttrell family of Lincolnshire."
