Sir John Baldwin

(1469 - 24 Oct 1545)

===Note=== It has become apparent from the named Sources below that Sir John Baldwin, brother of Richard Baldwin who died in 1485, is not of the same line as the Richard and John of Dundridge (ancestors of those who migrated to America), but possibly related in some way of which I am unclear. As such, this profile is a work in progress and will most likely be revised as I and others, continue to improve its accuracy.(krp) '''Sir John Baldwin had 6 children (1 son which preceded him in death, and 3 daughters)'''''and possibly 2 other sons (John and Richard) who preceded him in death. ===Disputed Origin and Pedigree=== Many researchers have had difficulty with the ancestry of the Baldwin family in Aston Clinton Parish, Bucks Co. And have reached different conclusions on the correct pedigree for different Baldwin families in this area. One such Source found was "Investigations concerning the BALDWIN family in Aston Clinton Parish, co., Bucks, written by Joseph Lemuel Chester, in 1884. He provides summary of all of the resources exhausted, and the years of experience in genealogical research, that I found him very credible and have relied on his information greatly in building this profile. Joseph Chester provides evidence of erroneous information printed in a reliable source, in which he states, on page 6, ''''""I may as well say at once that the early portion of the pedigree, printed in the N.E. Hist. and Gen. Register, July 1872, vol. xxvi, pg 294, is entirely erroneous."'' The author states that Henry, John, and Lettice Baldwin named in the pedigree printed in the Register, were children of Richard from Dundridge, and not children of Sylvester, son of John.Pg 6 of Chester's Investigations concerning the family of Baldwin Joseph Chester says'' "Of the first two generations as given in the Pedigree in the Register, ''"I have only to say that I can find no record of a subsidy being paid by John Baldwin on the manor of Otterarsfee in 1542, and no deed of 1546, or of any other date, by which he gave lands to his son Sylvester on his marriage to Sarah Gelly."'' And he states '"The taxes on the manor of Dundridge were not paid in 1579 by Sylvester Baldwin and his son Henry, as this pedigree states, but by Henry and Richard Baldwin, most probably father and son, who recently became possessors of it"''. He continues with ''"No Sylvester Baldwin died at Aston Clinton in 1593, but one was buried there in 1592"''. Charles Baldwin in "Baldwin Genealogy from 1500-1881" also provides information contrary to the above, by using as his source N.E. Hist. and Gen. Register, 1872, the same source Joseph Chester found to be incorrect.''"John Baldwin inherited the manor of Oterarsff from his brother Richard as next heir, at the age of 16. Richards will was proved August 11th, 1486. In 1542, John paid subsidies on this manor. John Baldwin known as Sir John Baldwin, was Chief Justice of the Common Pleas of England, 1536-1546, when he died."''pg 14 of the baldwin genealogy...by Charles Baldwin ==Biography== John Baldwin is said to have had an elder brother, Richard Baldwin (d.1484)Oxford Dictionary of National Biography ; Online edition Baldwin's uncle, also named John Baldwin (d. 1469), had a legal career in London as a bencher of Gray's Inn and common serjeant of the City. At his death in 1469 his estates in Aylesbury were inherited in turn by Baldwin's father, William, by Baldwin's elder brother, Richard (d.1484), and in 1484 by Baldwin himself. ===Disputed Spouse Information=== 1. According to Charles Baldwin, author of "Baldwin Genealogy from 1500-1881", many researchers and genealogists, have had difficulty in tracing Johns ancestry. One such conflicting matter is the relationship between John and Agnes Dormer, daughter of William Dormer. Some researchers show Agnes Dormer as mother to John. The author provides a citation from Harleian Mss. (No. 1533, Vol. 15) which states John ''married'' a daughter of William Dormer. According to Baldwin, 'the error of making Sir John Baldwin the son of William Baldwin, said to have married Agnes Dormer, arose from an erroneous transcript of the Dormer will, in the Collins Peerage, more than a century ago.Harleian Mss. (No. 1533, Vol. 15) 2. In the Visitation of Buckinhamshire 1566, page 11, show a daughter of William Dormer to have married Sir John Baldwin, Knt., Lord Chief Justice of Englandretrieved Nov 3, 2014 from: {http://archive.org/stream/visitationofbuck00harvrich#page/10/mode/2up] ===Will of William Dormer and Will of John Baldwin=== The Will of William Dormer, dated 22 Sept., 1506, directed him to be buried in the chancel at West Wicombe, and gave his dau. Johan Alburgh 10 marks, 'ti my dau. Margeri Deane 10 marks, to my dau. Agnes Baldwin 10 marks, and to Willaim Baldwin (my godson) 10 marks, to John Baldwin the younger, 10 marks, to Alice Baldwin 10 marks, to Richard Baldwin 10 marks, to Pernell Colyngborne 10 marks, to John Dormer 10 marks, to Henry Hunt 10 marks, to Lettice Dormer 10 marks, to Henry son of Thomas Deane, 40 shillings'; mentions wife Agnes, son Robert and provides monetary bequeathes. His executors were his wife and son Robert; overseers, John Baldwin the older, and John Colynborne. The will was proved 7 Oct., 1506.Pg 15 Baldwin genealogy from 1500-1881 The inquisition post mortem of Sir John (1546) shows that he had a son '''William''', who married Mary Tryingham, and died before that leaving a widow but no issue; a dau. '''Agnes''' or Ann, who married Robert Packington, mercer of London, they having a son Thomas, born about 1523; a dau. '''Petronella''' or parnell, who married 1st, Sir Thomas Ramsey, and 2nd Burlacy; she had a son John, born about 1528. Sir John also had a dau. '''Alice'''. ===Suggested Relationship of John Baldwin the Younger and John Baldwin the elder=== According to Charles Baldwin (pg 15) of Baldwin Genealogy..."a probable supposition would be that in the will of William Dormer, Sir John was John the elder, Agnes was his wife. William the godson, the William who died before 1546; Alice the dau. of Sir John '''and Richard and John Baldwin perhaps children of Sir John, who died young.''' The error of making Sir John, son of William said to have married Agnes Dormer arose from an erroneous transcript of the Dormer will, in the Collin Peerage, more than a century ago. John Colynborne, the other overseer, was a son-in-law, having married Pernell, daughter of William Dormer." ===Children=== (1) William Baldwin-died before 1546 (2)Agnes (Baldwin) Packington (3)Petronella (Baldwin) Burlacy Aka Ramsey (4) Alice Baldwin (5) John Baldwin the younger-died young (Unsure) (6) Richard-died young (Unsure) According to Richardson (pg 461) Sir John Baldwin in 1518, married (2) Anne (Norris) Wroughton, widow of William Wroughton (died before 1515), and daughter of Sir William Norris (d. 1507) of Yattendon Berkshire, by his third wife Anne Horne.Magna Carta; pg 61 She is said to have become insane before Baldwin's death, and in October 1545 Edward Seymour, Earl of Hertford, suggested that she be placed in the care of her son by her first marriage, Sir William Wroughton (d. 4 September 1559). Three months later Anne was sent to live with her kinswoman, Mary (Norris) Carew (d.1570), widow of Vice-Admiral Sir George Carew (c.1504 – 19 July 1545), and daughter of Henry Norris (b. before 1500, d. 1536) of Bray, Berkshire, and his wife, Mary.IvesCooperwroughton Retrieved 11-3-2014 from {http://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1509-1558/member/baldwin-john-146869-1545] The date of Anne's death is not known. Baldwin’s inheritance in Aylesbury consisted of the manor of Otters Fee, a house called ‘Le Crowne’ and a tenement called (ambiguously) ‘Bawd’s Fee’. In 1512 he acquired a 24-year lease of the nearby manor of Cranwell in Waddesdon, Buckinghamshire, but it was not until the last ten years of his life that he blossomed as a landowner. In 1536 he bought the manor of Danvers in Little Marlow, in the following year those of Chearsley and Ludgershall, and in 1538 that of Aylesbury itself: the last, bought from Thomas Boleyn, Earl of Wiltshire, made him the town’s chief proprietor. In 1541 he had a large grant of ex-monastic property, comprising the Greyfriars, Aylesbury, and the manors of Abbot’s Broughton and Upton, and after the Countess of Salisbury and her son Lord Montagu had been attainted, he paid £796 for their manors of Dundridge and Ellesborough. His Buckinghamshire property was valued in his inquisition at £200 a year. At the time of Sir John's death, his next heirs were his grandchildren, Thomas Packington, and John Burlacy. The manor of Aylesbury by inheritance went from the Baldwins to the Packingtons.By Charles Martin; Retrieved from {http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Baldwin,_John_(DNB00)] Retrieved from: {http://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1509-1558/member/baldwin-john-146869-1545] ==Sources== *WROUGHTON, Sir William (1509/10-59), of Broad Hinton, Wilts.
