However, the cross in the churchyard at Iron Acton had a shield of Acton impaling Fitz Nichol. Verney. ''Gloucestershire: The Vale...'' (1970): [http://tinyurl.com/27bjuty page 547] From the inscription on Robert’s gravestone, it is likely he is the builder of this cross (see below). Rodwell. ''Acton Court.'' (2004). It is possible that as a cadet branch of Poyntz of Cory Malet, without any real manorial land holdings, that Robert and his father John adopted the arms of Acton on obtaining the Acton inheritance. By the time of the 16th and 17th century Visitations, however, the family had returned to the ''barry of eight'' as their arms. From earlier Poyntz marriages, Robert also had the right to quarter Bardolf ''Azure three cinquefoils or,'' Mallett ''azure three escalops or,'' Acton ''quarterly per fess indented argent and azure,'' and Clanvowe ''paly of six or and azure on a fess gules, three mullets argent.'' On his marriage to the heiress Katherine Fitz Nichol, this branch of the Poyntz family also quartered Fitz Nichol ''quarterly gules and or a bend argent.''

=== Birth ===:'''Born:''' 11 June 1359 in Dewchurch in Archenfield, Herefordshire, England.:'''Baptism:''' 15 June 1359 in Dewchurch in Archenfield, Herefordshire, England.
:Robert Poyntz, Esq. was baptized at ‘Deucherch in Irchinfeld’ (Dewchurch in Archenfield, Herefordshire) on the Saturday the eve of Holy Trinity, 33 Edward III according to his Proof of Age. Cal. of IPM, vol. 15 (1970): 184, proof of age of Richard Poyntz. Trinity Sunday fell on June 16th and his baptism was thus 15 June 1359. This date is usually given as his birth date. However, both IPM’s of his father state his son Robert was born on the feast of St. Barnabus or a birth date of 11 June 1359. Cal. of IPM, vol. 14 (1952): 303-304, IPM of John Poyntz. Cal. of IPM, vol. 15 (1970):19-20, IPM of John Poyntz. It is probable that he was born on June 11 and then baptized on June 15.

=== Notes ===:'''Property and inheritance:''' Following the death of his father in 1376, his wardship was initially granted on 4 August 1376 to Sir John Beauchamp of Holt before being sold to Sir Robert Assheton. ''Cal. of the Patent Rolls, Ed. III vol. 16''. (1916): 305, wardship of Robert Poyntz Robert Poyntz proved his age on 8 March 1381 and received his lands on 15 March 1381. ''Cal. of the Close Rolls, Richard II vol. 1''. (1914): 446, Robert Poyntz receives his lands. From his father, he inherited the manors of Iron Acton, Elkstone and Winston, all in co. Gloucester. These manors came to the Poyntz family on the death of John de Acton in 1362 by fines originally made in 1343. National Archives, - C 143/266/20. 1343 grant of Elkstone and Wynston to John Poyns, knight, by John De Acton. ''Cal. of the Patent Rolls, Edward III, vol. 6''. (1902): 52, 1343 grant of Elkeston and Winstone. ''Cal. of the Patent Rolls, Edward III, vol. 7''. (London, 1904): 199, 1346 repeat of 1343 grant. ''Cal. of the Close Rolls, Ed. III vol 11''. (1909): 317-318, livery of Elkstone and Wynston to John Poyntz. ''Cal. of the Close Rolls, Edward III vol. 12'' (1910): 61-62, fines of John Poyntz regarding the lands of John De Acton. During his minority, Elkstone and Winston were granted to John Cousin of Cirencester, and after receiving his lands he settled these two manors on John Cousin and his wife for the term of their lives. ''Cal.of Fine Rolls, Ed. III vol. 8: 1368-1377''. (1924): 345. ''Cal. of the Patent Rolls, Richard II vol. 1. (1897): 616, grant by Robert Poyntz. His father left Robert Poyntz with some significant debt to Poncius Poyntz, Alderman John Pecche of London, and John King of Iron Acton. The debt to John King appears to have been met by granting him extensive lands in Iron Acton at a very favorable rent. ''Cal.of the Close Rolls, Richard II vol. 1. (1914): 512. In fact, in 1382, the sheriff of Gloucester was ordered to take the lands of Robert Poyntz into the King’s hands until the obligations were met. ''Cal.of the Close Rolls, Richard II vol. 1. (1914): 512.
:His second wife would eventually be co-heir to her father’s estates, and by association with this cadet branch of the Berkeley’s would allow him a more prominent role in Gloucester politics. On 15 February 1411, his father-in-law Thomas Fitz Nichol and Agnes his wife entailed the manor of Hull on Robert and Katherine Poyntz. ''Cal. of the Patent Rolls, Henry IV, vol. 4.''. (1909): 271, 15 Feb. 1411 entail of Hull. This fine also names in successive remainders the children of Robert and Katherine as Nicholas, Thomas, Maurice, Blanche, Isabel and Joan. Hull would belong entirely to Robert and Katherine after the death of Thomas Fitz Nichol, and was not split with the other co-heir. The manor of Nympsfield was split between Katherine and her sister Eleanor, wife of John Browning. The manor of Iron Acton was held of the Earls of Stafford in the 15th century and in 1405 he became steward for the powerful Staffords in the counties of Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Hampshire.
:'''Career:''' Robert Poyntz served in many capacities in the local government of Gloucester. He was escheator for Gloucester and the adjacent Marches in all or part of 1395, 1396, 1397, 1399, 1400, 1401, 1402, 1403 and 1404. He was high sheriff of Gloucester from 1 Dec. 1396 to 3 Nov. 1397. He served on various commissions in Gloucester, including wastes (Apr. 1399), trespasses (May 1400), felonies (Aug. 1401), forfeited goods in Glos., Herefs., Wilts. (Feb. 1405), disseisin (Nov. 1421), piracy (Oct. 1421), array (Dec. 1399, Sept., Nov. 1403, May 1415), oyer and terminer (May 1400), a commission to make proclamation of Henry IV's intention to govern well (May 1402), of sewers between Bristol and Gloucester (Mar. 1410, Apr. 1412, May 1413), and to raise royal loans (Nov. 1419, Jan. 1420). [17]
:He was a member of Parliament along with his father-in-law, Sir Thomas Fitz Nichol in 1415, and again 1417. Williams. ''Parliamentary History of Gloucester''. (1898): 32. [http://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1386-1421/member/poyntz-robert-1359-1439 History of Parliament Online 1359-1439, Robert Poyntz]. Despite his many services and positions typically filled by a knight, he was not knighted. This was probably by his choice (since the cost of knighthood was quite high), for on 10 Nov. 1394 he received an exemption for life “from being compelled to take the order of knighthood against his will.” ''Cal. of the Patent Rolls, Richard II vol. 5. (1905): 511, Robert Poyns, Esq. exemption from knighthood.
