Elizabeth Filmer
(1592 - Aft 1678)
[[Category:Questionable_Gateway_Ancestors]]
== Biography ==According to Melvin Gene Carter's family genealogy, based on extensive family interviews and other sources, William Forkner (Faulkner) was a wealthy draper - cloth merchant - in London. He married British aristocrat Dame Elizabeth Filmer, born in 1592 in East Sutton, Kent. They married on February 6, 1620, in St. Benet's church, Paul's Wharf, Upper Thames Street, London. Both her father and brother Reginald Filmer had extensive business dealings in London in the early 17th Century and no doubt that is how they met William Faulkner (aka Faulconer, Forkner, Falkner...). The Faulkners have been said to have originated in Wales but this remains unproven. In fact, the most-recent research traces this family to Lewes, East Sussex, England, where William's father, [[Faulkner-1145 |Edward Faulkner]], was already an established merchant in London by the time of his son's 1590 birth there. William Faulkner and Elizabeth were the parents of John Forkner (Faulkner), Sr., a leather craftsman, specializing in footwear, who emigrated to Maryland in 1665 with his wife (also named Elizabeth Filmer - she was the niece of Dame Elizabeth) their 3 sons and 2 servants. Lady Elizabeth Filmer Faulkner is noted to have joined them in Maryland in 1677 but not William, so it is assumed that William Faulkner died before 1677 in England.
The following citation from Sir Edward Filmer's last will and testament directly cites Elizabeth's marriage to William Faulkner (aka Forkner - many spelling variations)
: WILL OF SIR EDWARD FILMER, KNIGHT (aged 63, 17th. January, last) Will Dated 20 October, Vth. Charles I ; Proved 5 December 1629: '''To my daughter, ELIZABETH, wife of William Faulkner, citizen and draper of London,''' if she survives her husband L 500. If the said husband survives said ELIZABETH, then to her childre n L 300, equally divided. If she dies without issue, then to her husband L 20. Executors to f ing meat, drink and apparel to the said ELIZABETH to the value of L 4- yearly... (After this, the will discusses Sir Edward's other provisions for his children).
Lady Elizabeth Filmer Faulkner and her husband William Faulkner / Faulconer lived in London and in the village of Beddingham, Sussex, England. This area, near Lewes, seems to be the Faulkner family seat as many of the family are listed in its parish registers.
