== Biography ==}
}Sir William Keith was the son of Sir Robert Keith.Mosley, Charles, editor. Burke's Peerage, Baronetage & Knightage, 107th edition, 3 volumes. Wilmington, Delaware, U.S.A.: Burke's Peerage (Genealogical Books) Ltd, 2003. Volume 2, page 2195.
"On 26 April 1414, Pope Benedict XIII issued a commission to grant dispensation for the marriage of ‘William de Ketht’ of St. Andrews diocese and Marjorie Fraser, daughter of Alexander Fraser of Moray diocese." However, assuming that they did marry, she may have died before about 1422.
He married (perhaps about 1422) to Mary Hamilton (maiden name uncertain), perhaps daughter of James Hamilton, 5th of Cadzow. And after producing most (if not all) of William's children, she died before August 1442.
In a Charter date 20 May 1442, William Keith names Robert Keith as his eldest son and successor, "whom failing to William, John or Alexander, brothers of said Robert". Source: Reg. Mag. Sig.- 28 Oct. 1444". Unfortunately in 1446, Robert predeceased his father, so the second son William II would become the successor.
Between 1446 and 1451 he was made a Lord of Parliament as Lord Keith. He was one of the guarantors of the peace treaty with the English in 1457 and on August 6th he witnessed the confirmation of a treaty by King James II. Source: "Foedera"- Vol.V, pt. ii, p.77.
In 1457, James II created Sir William Keith, first Earl Marischal. He was present at the Court held in Aberdeen on the 15th of May, 1457, when Lord Erskine’s claim to the Earldom of Mar was rejected.
William Keith held the office of Marischal of Scotland beginning in 1457.G.E. Cokayne; with Vicary Gibbs, H.A. Doubleday, Geoffrey H. White, Duncan Warrand and Lord Howard de Walden, editors, The Complete Peerage of England, Scotland, Ireland, Great Britain and the United Kingdom, Extant, Extinct or Dormant, new ed., 13 volumes in 14 (1910-1959; reprint in 6 volumes, Gloucester, U.K.: Alan Sutton Publishing, 2000), volume I, page 79. He died before 16 March 1463/64, Dunottar Castle, Stonehaven, Kincardineshire, Scotland.
=== Erroneous information ===
The following three statements are clearly too early in time and probably refer to his grandfather whose name was also William Keith:
He married Margaret Fraser, daughter of John Fraser of Touchfraser, before 3 May 1351.
He held the office of Sheriff of Kincardineshire between 1357 and 1359.
He died between 13 May 1407 and 2 June 1413.
