Sir William de la Haye, 1st Lord Hay was the son of [[Hay-1184|Sir Thomas de la Haye, 7th of Erroll]] and [[Stewart-970|Elizabeth Stewart]].Alison Weir, Britain's Royal Families: The Complete Genealogy (London, U.K.: The Bodley Head, 1999), page 221.

William succeeded his father in 1406, who died shortly before 03 August 1406.
William was knighted at His Majesty's coronation, appointed one of the Wardens of the Marches in 1430.
He was invested as a Knight. He was Commissioner to treat for the ransom of King James I in 1423.2 He held the office of Joint Lord Warden of the Marches in 1430.Mosley, Charles, editor. He married [[Gray-1976|Margaret Gray]], the daughter of [[Gray-5348|Sir Patrick Gray]] of Broxmouth.

==Note=="The family of Hay is one of the most illustrious in Scotland. Nearly seven centuries ago, William De Haya, settled in Lothian and filled office of Royal Butler during the reigns of Malcolm IV and William the Lion. He died about the year 1170 and left his wife Juliana, dau. Ranalpulph de Soulis, Lord of Liddesdale and his two sons: William, progenitor of the Earls of Errol and Robert, progenitor of the Earls of Locherwort, who for some generations were lords of Yester and are now Marquises of Tweeddale. Sir John de Haya, grandson of Robert, Married Margaret, dau. and heiress of Robert de Lyne, Lord of Locherwort and left a son. Sir Gilbert de Haya, who married Mary, dau. and heiress of Sir Simon Fraser of Oliver Castle and whose great-grandson was Sir Thomas Hay, Lord of Locherwort, married Joanna, dau. and heiress of Sir Hew Gifford, Lord of Yester, was celebrated in Scottish history for his necromantic powers ( see Scott's Marmion). Their son was Sir William Hay, Lord of Locherwort and Yester who married Alicia, dau. of Sir Gilbert Hay, Earl of Errol and left two sons. 1. Sir David Hay, Baron of Yester ( who was the ancestor of the Marquis of Tweedsdale) married Mary, dau. of 1st Earl of Angus, and the Princess Mary daughter of King Robert. Sir Edmond Hay, Lord of Tallo and Limplum was the ancestor of the Hays of Arran. Sir David Hay was succeeded by his son. who was John Hay, Baron of Yester, who by solemn investiture in Parliament, Jan 29,1487, was advanced to the dignity of Lord Hay of Yester. His grandson was John, third Lord Hay of Yester."
