He was the ancestor of the family of Skelmorlie, of which the 7th Laird was created Sir Robert Montgomerie, 1st Baronet Montgomery on 1 Jan 1628. The direct male line ended with the heiress of the 5th Baronet, Lilias Montgomerie, who m. Alexander Montgomerie of Coilsfield, and her eldest son became 12th Earl of Eglinton.
He married Margaret Houston, daughter of Sir John Houston.
