He married firstly, [[Sandilands-25|Marion Sandilands]], daughter of Sir James Sandiland of Calder, by Eleanora, only daughter of Archibald Douglas of that Ilk, and relict of Alexander Bruce, Earl of Carrick.
He married secondly, [[Maxwell-864|Agnes Maxwell]], daughter of Sir John Maxwell of Pollok and Elizabeth de Lindsay.

In 1357 he was a hostage to the English for the liberation of King David II.
