John progenitor and first laird of the Erskines of Dun.
John was born about 1371 second son of Sir Thomas Erskine of that Ilk and his second spouse Janet Keith or Barclay.
He appears to have been knighted about 1390.

Sir John Erskine had a son:

Sir John Erskine of Dun granted a charter to Walter, Bishop of Brechin of the lands of Ecclesjohn in the Barony of Dun that they should celebrate annually in memory of Robert Erskine, his grandfather, and Thomas Erskine, his father, in the Cathedral Church of Brechin saying at vespers the Placebo and Dirge followed in the morning a solemn requiem mass. Sir John made a charter granting Philip de Camera (Chamber), laird of Newbigging, the marsh of Glenskinno in the lordship of Ecclesjohn on 20 August 1419.
