:The sources for Berowald are meagre. Here is what Duncan Forbes writing in 1698 has to say:
::"... As for the descendents, either by sons or daughters, nothing can be had for it but the common tradition, or (which is all one with it) a single sheet of a fragment, wrot above ane hundred years agoe, which bears the account (and that very imperfectly) of five or six generations down from Sir Walter who married the Earle of Ross his daughter. This all the authority there is for that Berowald and John of Ardmelly, and for Margaret the other sister. "[[#Forbes|Forbes]]: [https://archive.org/details/aneaccountoffami00spal/page/14 Page 15]
:"the Red Tod" (i.e. the Red Fox) was also an epithet applied to James V who had red hair. Perhaps that was also the origin of Berowald's nickname.
:Born according to Rootsweb in Kincairdy Castle, Innes, Morayshire and died in Halton, Mid Lothian.http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=aet-t&id=I53353. Several things wrong here:* There is as far as I know no such castle as Kincairdy. The Inneses at the time owned however Kinnairdy Castle, which is in Banffshire.* The original source calls him "of Hattoun" which is not likely to be in Midlothian.* But anyway, as indicated above, we have no sources about where Berowald was born or died.
