== Biography ==John was born about the middle of the fourteenth century, perhaps at Balmuto in Fife.
His parentage is not clearly defined but he was probably grandson of John de Glen who had a charter of Balmuto in the reign of King Robert the Bruce. RMS Vol. i App.2 633 see [https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=njp.32101038096846;view=1up;seq=582]
About 1380 -85 he married Margaret Erskine daughter and co-heiress to Alan Erskine and Isabel Inchmartine of Inchmartine.
He was knighted towards the end of the 1390's as he appears with other who were designed knights in a charter by William Scott of Balwearie while he is designed simply John of Glen.Melville Charters 23 see [https://archive.org/details/melvillesearlsv300fras/page/n19] By about 1400 he was Sir John.
His wife's sister Isabel shared in the estate of their parents including parts of Balmuto and Inchmartine.. She married Sir David de Wemyss the eldest son of Sir John de Wemyss of Reres and Kincaldrum. About 1400 the sisters and their spouses Sir John and Sir David, agreed to an exchange of lands for efficiency of management. Wemyss Charters 28 see [https://archive.org/details/memorialsoffamil02fras/page/110]
Also about 1400 (1398x1401), Sir John Glen of Balmuto was witness to a charter by Thomas Lord Erskine. NRS GD124/1/1055 see [http://catalogue.nrscotland.gov.uk/nrsonlinecatalogue/details.aspx?reference=GD124%2f1%2f1055&st=1&tc=y&tl=n&tn=n&tp=n&k=&ko=a&r=GD124%2f1%2f1055&ro=s&df=&dt=&di=y]
Sir John and Margaret Erskine had three daughters :
1. Margery who married who Sir Andrew Ogilvy son of Auchterhouse who by this marriage gained the title of Inchmartine.
2. Isabel whomarried as second wife to Walter Ogilvy of Lintrathen
3. Christian who married David Ogilvy of Kinneff who by this marriage gained the title of Balmuto,
About 1405, Sir John Glen granted the lands of Balhawell to Walter Ogilvy on his marriage to Isabel Glen. RMS Vol.i 1963 see [https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=njp.32101038096846;view=1up;seq=678]
Sir John died about 1410 and was survived by his wife Margaret Erskine, Lady Inchmartine and their three daughters.
Note: It is claimed by some that in the late 14th century Sir John Boswell of Balgregie in Fife married Mariota, the daughter of Sir John Glen of Glenniston, and in so doing received one third of the barony of Balmuto, later acquiring the other two thirds. If Mariota was a daughter of this Sir John Glen then Mariota must have been by an earlier marriage as she was not an heiress of Margaret Erskine. She may have been a sister to Sir John and granted a substantial tocher out of Balmuto on her marriage.
