-- MERGED NOTE ------------

== Biography ==
John was born about 1380, third son to Walter Ogilvy of Auchterhouse, Sheriff of Angus.
About 1400 he married. It is assumed that his wife was Marion Seaton sister to Alexander Seaton of Gordon and thus a daughter of Sir William Seton of Seton and his wife Janet Fleming. Registrum de Panmure, Vol. ii 230 see [https://archive.org/stream/registrumdepanm00ofgoog#page/n295/mode/2up]

John had three sons:

1. Alexander his heir

2. Walter who was heir to Alexanders son.

3. Thomas who acquired Clova through marriage.
John's brother Walter Ogilvy of Lintrathen resigned his lands of Inverquharity and gifted them to John. At Dundee on 3 June 1420, William Douglas the earl of Angus granted confirmation of the charter of Walter Ogilvy lord of Lintrathen, made to John Ogilvy, his brother, of all the lands of Inverquharity, in the barony of Kirriemuir and sheriffdom of Forfar ; to be held to him, his heirs, successors, and assignees, from the said Walter. NRS GD205/3/1 see [http://catalogue.nrscotland.gov.uk/nrsonlinecatalogue/details.aspx?reference=GD205%2f3%2f1&st=1&tc=y&tl=n&tn=n&tp=n&k=Inverquharity+&ko=a&r=&ro=s&df=1420&dt=1430&di=n] This was also confirmed later by a Royal Charter along with two other charters. The second was signed at the town house of Dundee on 31 March 1422 when William Douglas earl of Angus granted his faithful armiger, John Ogilvy of Inverquharity, the lands of Crieff, KirriemuirRMS Vol.2 Chrtr.1550 see [https://archive.org/stream/registrummagnisi02scot#page/324/mode/2up]
John and his son Thpmas witnessed a charter at Edinburgh 28 April 1426 whereby William Giffart was granted lands in the neighbourhood of Inverquharity. RMS Vol.2 111 see [https://archive.org/stream/registrummagnisi02scot#page/22/mode/2up]
The assumption that John’s wife was Marion Seaton is supported by the following transaction. On 18 January 1429/30, a Precept of sasine by William Douglas, Earl of Angus, was granted in favour of Alexander Seaton of Gordon, of lands of Newton, Herdhill, Balbrydie, Kinnordy, Mains and Easter Lednathy. The seals of the Earl and John Ogilvy, as bailie of the barony of Kirriemuir, were appended. Subsequently, on 15 January 1434/35, Alexander Seaton of Gordon granted a Charter by in favour of Alexander Ogilvy, son and heir of John Ogilvy of Inverquharity, of above lands. NRS GD205/3/2 see [http://catalogue.nrscotland.gov.uk/nrsonlinecatalogue/details.aspx?reference=GD205%2f3%2f2&st=1&tc=y&tl=n&tn=n&tp=n&k=Inverquharity+&ko=a&r=&ro=s&df=1420&dt=1430&di=n]

John died between 9 December 1433 and 15 January 1434/5 and was survived by the three above mentioned sons.
