"Sir John Menteith was the son of Walter Stewart, Earl of Menteith and Mary of Monteith, Countess of Menteith. He held the office of Sheriff of Dunbartonshire in 1304. He captured Sir William Wallace, and took him in chains to London. He joined Robert the Bruce and fought in the War of Scottish Independence. He was Guardian of the Earldom on Menteith in 1320.
