Sir William Borthwick

(Abt 1368 - 1439)

== Biography of Sir William Borthwick==: "Sir William Borthwick, of Borthwick, father of the 1st lord, obtained from King James I a letter under the Great Seal, dated 2 June 1430, authorizing him to build and fortify a castle in the moat of Lochorwort, in the county of Edinburgh. The site of the castle was formerly the property of that branch of the noble family of Hay, now represented by the Marquess of Tweeddale. The castle, erected by Sir William Borthwick under the royal authority...still exists, although bearing traces of the siege of Oliver Cromwell."''A Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Peerage and Baronetage''; Burke, B., (London): 1880, Volume 42, Part 1, p. 136: "The surname of the founder was applied to the castle and the parish in which it is situated. The exact date of the death of Sir William Borthwick has not been ascertained. It is probable that he did not long enjoy his new castle, as he died before the year 1439, and was survived by his son and heir, William Borthwick, of Borthwick, who...(was) made a lord of parliament by King James II...on 12 Jun 1452."''A Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Peerage and Baronetage''; Burke, B., (London): 1880, Volume 42, Part 1, p. 137
