===Birth===Establishing Sir William's birth year can be approximated by interpolation of known dates and events. His youngest son, and sixth child, Freskin was appointed Parson of the church at Glasgow no later than 1202, establishing Freskin's birth as no later than 1181, allowing for the birth of one child per year, Archibald, Sir William's oldest child was born not later than 1175, and by extension Sir William married no later than 1174. From this we can establish his birth year as about 1156 at the latest, and probably somewhat earlier. He witnessed charters between King David and Joceline, who was Bishop of Glasgow from 1174 to 1199, corroborating his age of Majority.
'''His Parents are unknown'''. As William was called "3rd Lord of Douglas" some have extended his pedigree back two more generations and include a Sir John de Duglas as his father and Sir William de Duglas as his grandfather. Neither are known from history. The assignment of Theobald Le Fleming as his father is apocryphal and may just be emblematic of the supposed origins of the Douglas Clan centuries earlier. It is known that Douglasdale was not held by any religious order and there is no record of anyone other than the Douglasses claiming title to it, indicating they may have been native to the land for generations.
===Marriage===His wife's name is not known for certain. His second son Brice was Bishop of Moray. The name of Freskin of Kerdal is listed among the benefactors of the bishop's first cathedral of Spynie whom Brice refers to as uncle, suggesting that his mother may have been Freskin's sister. Although nothing is known of Freskin's ancestry he is supposed to be of the family De Moravia (or deMoray) based on land holdings in Strathnairn.
===Death===
Date of death is uncertain; he does not appear on record after 1214.
===Notes===
:From ''Burke's Peerage'':"First Douglas for which written records are available. All previous records were probably lost in the wars of succession. It is known that Douglases resided in the area for many years before 1057. Sir William witnessed charters by King David and Josline Bishop of Glasgow between 1174 and 1199. He held the lands of Glendinning."
