}

=== Birth ===: His birth year is not known for certain but based on a writ in 1267 he describes himself as over 60, establishing his birth as soon after 1200. William was tall and impressive of stature, earning him the nickmane "Longlegs."

=== Marriage ===:One known marriage to Constance of Batail probably around 1242 as their oldest son Hugh was four years shy of majority on Palm Sunday 1259 when he entered into a marriage contract with Marjory Abernathy.:Assertions that William was married first to Martha de Carrick are without basis and this person is not found in any known records.

=== Historical Note ===: DOUGLAS CASTLE was also known as "Castle Dangerous." It was the stronghold of the Black Douglases and a center of activity during the Scottish wars for independence led by William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. The English briefly held the castle until it was recaptured and destroyed by its owner Sir James "The Black" Douglas.
