(Abt 1209 - Bef 14 Nov 1281)
}
Biography
Parentage
Price states that Gwenllian ferch Llywelyn was the daughter of Llywelyn ap Iorwerth and his mistress Tangwystl ferch Llywarch and the sister of Gruffydd ap Llywelyn.
This is also stated by Marriages and politics in Wales, 1066-1282. "Marriage and politics in Wales, 1066-1282" Welsh History Review 4 Nos. 1-4 (1968-69):3-20, especially 17; OCR copy, Welsh Journals Online. Wikipedia shows Gwennlian's mother to be Eleanor de Montfort, but this is an error. Eleanor married Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, Gwenllian's nephew by her brother Gruffydd.)
Cawley states that only Gruffydd is known to be Tangwystl's child and therefore Gwenllian, birth date unknown, was born to Llywelyn and a mistress other than Tangwystl. Llywelyn ap Iorwerth, Cawley, The Foundation for Medieval Genealogy
Birth Estimation
No sources give a birth year for Gwennlian. If she was 15 at her first marriage in 1224, her birth year could be estimated at 1209. This year is consistent with other estimates.
1224 Marriage to William de Lacy
By 28 July 1224, she had married William de Lacy, son of Hugh de Lacy and Rose O'Connor of Connacht (daughter of Roderick O'Connor), and half-brother of Hugh de Lacy, Earl of Ulster.John Edward Lloyd, "Who Was Gwenllian de Lacy," Archaeologia Cambrensis 19 (1919): 292-298. In his report to King Henry dated 5 Aug 1224 following the capture of castle Trum, William Marshall Earl of Pembroke records that "the wife of William de Lacy, the daughter of Llewllyn, Griffin´s sister, the wife of Thomas Blund, William´s brother, and the mother of William, of Thomas, and of him that was killed" were in the castle[295].
The fact of this married is confirmed by the case she brought in 1241 against Dafyd ap Llywelyn for the recovery of manors.The acts of Welsh rulers, 1120-1283 by Dr. Charles Insley Huw Pryce, Cardiff : University of Wales Press, 2005.
