Leland Stanford Ritter
(28 Apr 1920 - 4 Mar 2003)
[Lulu Margaret Baker Descendants by Michael Ritter.ged]
BIOGRAPHY: My grandpa was named after Amasa Leland Stanford (1824-1893), American Statesman & Railroad Tycoon. According to my grandfather, for whatever reason, at the time of his birth the doctor who delivered my grandpa asked if he could name the child and Lee's mother agreed.
-
In 1935, age 15, he bought his first motorcycle. It was a 1925 Harley Davidson. He remembers loving the sound of the engine and that you could probably hear it miles away. He thinks he was probably the first to own one in Jackson County. He was an avid "motor-sickle" rider most of his life.
-
Lee served in the Air Force from Mar, 1942- Aug, 1943 receiving a medical discharge. He served as a mechanic and refueler for planes and trucks at the Colorado Springs base. He recalls the time the base received a brand new fueling truck that got less than 1 mile to the gallon, and watching the time that the only P-38 stationed there was crash landed outside the hangar and the pilot was able to walk away from a "large pile of debris".
-
Most of his career was spent working construction around the Columbia River valley operating dozers, scrapers, dumptrucks, etc, on such projects as the John Day, The Dalles Dam, and many of the first highways through the area. From the 1960's and past retirement, my grandparents owned and maintained an 11 acre farm in Maryhill on which they alternately over the years grew apples, cherries, peaches, blackberries, grapes and asparagus. They also spent a good amount of time on the farm watching grandchildren, nephews, nieces and an assortment of other's children grow.
