His nephew Crawford McDonald in telephone interview conducted 5/3/04 said Vance Rutledge became a fur trapper in Alaska and at some point all of the dogs on his sled fell into the ice. He was forced to walk 14 miles in the snow with only two dogs remaining and was taken in and nursed by aneskimo village. As a result of this misadventure he contracted tuberculosis and died only a year or two after returning home to Memphis.
