James BENNETT

(Abt 1785 - Abt 1825)

James Bennett is said to have been born in Maryland or possibly North
Carolina about 1785-1790. He married Ary Prather then living in Rowan
County, North Carolina.

In early 1820 James, with his family and other relatives, went by wagon

train to Clark County, Indiana. With James was his wife Ary, his son,

Joshua, his son Fielding and another son, name unknown, according to the
1820 census.

James with other Bennett, Gaither, Prather and Jacob families settled
around Prather, a village near Watson, Indiana. Here, in 1823, a
daughter, Elizabeth Emily, was born.

Mrs. Ary Bennett is listed in the 1830 census as head of the house with

two sons and her daughter so James must have died between 1822 and 1830.
He is said to have been burried in the old part of New Chapel Church
Cemetery but the stone has evidently been lost in a cemetery cleaning.

With her children grown, Ary lived with her son Joshua until her death in
1867. She is burried with Joshua and some of his family in New Chapel
Cemetery.
