John Dudley Lowe
(16 Apr 1838 - 5 Mar 1904)
John Dudley Lowe was born in South Carolina to Mahala Flowers and Joh n Obediah Lowe. After the death of his father in 1839, his mother rem arried to
Aziel Norris and the family relocated to Alabama about 1845. He wa s living
in Talladega Co. in 1850. He enlisted in the 9th Alabama Infantry Bat talion in 1861 and is listed on the original muster. This unit was su bsequently enlarged to the 58th Alabama Infantry Regiment. The regime nt participated in Shiloh, Chicamauga and in various campaigns throug h Atlanta and Nashville(see below).He is listed as a teamster in thi s regiment and was captured at Spanish Fort in the final defense of M obile Alabama. He married Nancy Caroline Harrison (a next door neigh bor to his mother in 1860) in St. Clair Co. Alabama in 1866. He cont inued to live in Alabama until his death in 1904, he is buried in Mac edonia Cemetery, Shelby County,Alabama. He is listed in the census a s being a farmer and according to his grandson, Grover Lowe, he ra n a sorgum mill.
Civil War Record:
The Ninth Alabama Infantry Battalion was organized at New Bern, Alaba ma November 1861 as a nine company unit. The battalion was placed o n duty at Mobile, Alabamaand joined the Army of the Tennessee in th e summer of1863. In August, it was mustered out and reformed as th e 58th Alabama Infantry, August 1863. J.D.Lowe was in Company I als o referred to as the St. Clair Sharpshooters and in 1863 was transfer red to Company E. The regiment served in the Army of Tennessee unti l early in 1865 when it was transferred to the Department of Alabama , Mississippi, and East Louisiana. J.D. Lowe was subsequently capture d at Spanish Fort, Mobile, Alabama and interred at Ship Island, Missi ssippi until the end of hostilities.
