Bona Sforza

(13 Feb 1495 - 7 Nov 1558)

Bona was born on 13 February 1495 in Vigevano, the daughter of Gian Galeazzo II Maria Sforza, Duke of Milan and Isabella of Aragón, Princess of Naples and Duchess of Bari. She was named after her paternal grandmother Bona of Savoy, wife of Galeazzo Maria Sforza, Duke of Milan. When her mother died she succeeded also as Duchess of Bari and Princess of Rossano, and she became the holder of the Brienne claim to the title of King of Jerusalem.

In 1518 she became the second wife of King Zygmunt I of Poland, and they had six children. Bona was the niece of Bianca Maria Sforza, who in 1493 had married Emperor Maximilian I. Bona was a patron of Renaissance culture, which began to flourish in Poland. She is also considered one of the mothers of modern Polish cuisine since she became famous for introduction of Italian vegetables to Polish tables.

Bona died in Bari, Italy on 7 November 1558. Her heir was her only surviving son Zygmunt II August, King of Poland.
