Sigmund I King of Poland
(1 Jan 1467 - 1 Apr 1548)
165 Knight in the Order of the Golden Fleece 1519
Son of Kazimierz IV Jagiello, king of Poland and Elisabeth of Austria, Zygmunt was born on 1 January 1467. When he became king of Poland in 1506 Zygmunt signed _Nihil novi_, a statute which did a great deal of harm to the process of ruling Poland, as it decreed that no new business could be conducted without the unanimous consent of the three estates: the king, the senate and the representatives of the landowners. As the landowners feared to give the king a big standing army, the country became militarily unprepared. However, Zygmunt drove the Russians out of Lithuania after his victory at Orsza. He tolerated Lutheranism and was a just ruler.
On 28 February 1512 Zygmunt married Barbara Zapolya, daughter of Istvan Zapolya, count of Zips, palatin of Hungary, and Jadwiga von Teschen. They had two daughters of whom Hedwig would have progeny. In 1518 he married his second wife Bona Sforza, daughter of Gian Galeazzo II Maria Sforza, duke of Milan, and Isabella of Aragón. They had six children of whom a son and two daughters would have progeny. Before he was married he had fathered three children by Katarzyna Telniczanka. In 1509 she had married Andrzej Koscielecki. Zygmunt died on 1 April 1548 and was buried in the Wawel Cathedral of Krakow. He was succeeded by his son Zygmunt II August as king of Poland.
