Marquis Ernst von Baden Durlach

(7 Oct 1482 - 6 Feb 1553)

Ernst was born on 7 October 1482, the youngest of three surviving sons of Margrave Christoph I of Baden and Countess Ottilie von Katzenelnbogen. After his father was deposed in 1516 because of his dementia, Ernst shared the margravate of Baden with his brothers Philipp and Bernhard. He was the founder of the Baden-Durlach line of the house of Baden, with his seat at Pfortzheim.

Ernst married three times. His first marriage in 1510 to Elisabeth von Brandenburg-Ansbach, daughter of Friedrich V, Markgraf von Brandenburg-Ansbach-Bayreuth, and Sofie of Poland, produced seven children; his sons of that marriage died before him, but his daughter Anna would marry Karl I, Graf von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, and bear 15 children. His second marriage in 1518/1520 to Ursula von Rosenfeld, daughter of Georg, Herr von Rosenfeld, and Margarethe von Hoheneck, produced three children including his eventual heir Karl II. His third marriage in 1544 to Anna Bombast von Hohenheim was childless.

During the Reformation Ernst attempted to steer a middle course between the Catholics and Protestants. He died on 6 February 1553.
