Marquise Sibylla von Baden
(26 Apr 1485 - 10 Jul 1518)
Sibylla was born on 26 April 1485, the daughter of Christoph I, Markgraf von Baden, and Gräfin Ottilie von Katzenelnbogen. On 24 January 1505 in Baden she married Philipp III, Graf von Hanau-Lichtenberg, son of Philipp II, Graf von Hanau-Lichtenberg, and Gräfin Anna von Isenburg-Büdingen. She brought a dowry of 5000 fl. to the marriage. They had a son Philipp IV who would have progeny, and five daughters of whom only Johanna would have progeny.
Sibylla endowed the altar in the town church of Sankt Nikolaus in Babenhausen. After she had given birth by 1513 only to daughters, she promised to donate an altar if she gave birth to a son. Her prayer was answered in 1514 with the birth of Philipp IV, the heir to Hanau-Lichtenberg.
The high altar belongs to the important middle-Rhine pieces of art of this time. The artist is unknown. The left wing of the altar shows Bernhard III, Markgraf von Baden-Pforzheim (1428-1458), renowned for his devoutness and generosity, who would be beatified in the 18th century as the Blessed Bernhard of Baden. He was a brother of her grandfather.
Sibylla died on 10 July 1518 and was buried in the family crypt of the counts of Hanau-Lichtenberg in the town church of Sankt Nikolaus in Babenhausen, where her husband was also later buried.
