Count Ludwig III Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort

(17 Feb 1530 - 13 Mar 1611)

Ludwig was born in Vaihingen on 17 February 1530, the third son of Friedrich Graf zu Löwenstein and Helene von Königsegg. He was the grandson of Ludwig I, the first Graf zu Löwenstein and great grandson of Friedrich 'der Siegreiche', Kurfürst von der Pfalz. Ludwig was stadtholder of Styria, Carinthia and Carnolia. On 2 September 1566 he married Gräfin Anna zu Stolberg-Königstein, the youngest daughter of three daughters of Graf Ludwig zu Stolberg-Königstein und Rochefort and Gräfin Walpurgis von Wied. In 1556 Anna's father had inherited the county of Wertheim on the death in 1556 of Michael III Graf von Wertheim und Breuberg, first husband of his eldest daughter Katharina, and of their only child Barbara. On the death of Anna's father she inherited the county of Wertheim from him, and in 1580 Ludwig added Wertheim to his name, as Graf zu Löwenstein-Wertheim.

Ludwig and Anna had seven children, including four sons who reached adulthood. Ludwig died on 13 March 1611 in Wertheim. After his death his four sons became co-regents of the county of Wertheim and other properties. Only two brothers, Christoph Ludwig and Johann Dietrich had heirs, and formed the two branches of the family - one Protestant, the other Catholic - which continue today.
