Individual Details
Count Johann Dietrich Theodor Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort
(31 Jan 1585 - 6 Mar 1644)
Johann Theodor was born on 31 January 1585, the last of five sons of Ludwig III Graf zu Löwenstein and Gräfin Anna zu Stolberg-Königstein, of whom four reached maturity. On 6 November 1610 he married Gräfin Josine von der Marck, daughter of Graf Philipp von der Marck and Gräfin Katharina von Manderscheid-Virneburg. They had seven children of whom Ferdinand Karolus and Dorothea Katharina would have progeny.
Johann Theodor was invested with joint administration of the county of Rochefort in 1608, and full possession on the death of his elder brother Wolfgang Ernst in 1636. He then added Rochefort to his name, becoming Graf und Herr zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort. Although the Löwenstein family had converted to Protestantism soon after the appearance of Luther, Johann Theodor converted back to Catholicism in 1621, soon after the defeat of the Protestant forces under the Elector Friedrich V at the battle of the White Mountain on 8 November 1620. His reconversion gave rise to a serious rift within the Löwenstein family. Of the two branches stemming from Johann Theodor and his eldest brother Christoph Ludwig, the Johann Theodor's Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort line was Catholic, while the Löwenstein-Wertheim-Virneburg line founded by his brother was Protestant.
A charming story is associated with Johann Theodor's wife Josine. The chapel of Lorette in the abbey Notre-Dame-de Saint-Rémy in Rochefort was founded by her in 1625. A legend has it that she had promised to build a chapel if she could recover her son, kidnapped by a monkey.
Josine died on 26 February 1626 in Rochefort. Johann Theodor died on 6 March 1644 in Wertheim.
