Niccolo Orsini Count di Nola

(27 Aug 1331 - 14 Feb 1399)

Niccolo was born on 27 August 1331, the son of Roberto Orsini, conte di Nola, grand justiciar of Naples, and Sveva del Balzo, the daughter and heiress of Hugues de Baux, conte di Soleto; because of her the family was later known as del Balzo Orsini.

Niccolo married Giovanna de Sabran, daughter of Guillaume de Sabran, 3.conte di Ariano, conte di Apici, and his second wife Francesca di Celano, contessa di Anglone. They had two sons and a daughter, all of whom would have progeny, though their son Roberto left only illegitimate issue.

In 1356 Niccolo became a Roman senator, and in 1359 viceroy of Abruzzi. In 1365 he was appointed standard-bearer of the Holy Roman Church and rector of the patrimony of St. Peter in Tuscany. In 1371 he became governor of Orvieto, and in 1383 chancellor of the kingdom of Naples. He corresponded with Birgitta Birgersdotter (FinstaƤtten) (later canonised as 'Saint Birgitta' of Sweden), and in 1373 after her death he carried her _Revelations_ to Pope Gregory XI in Avignon, the work that persuaded the pope to return to Rome in 1376. In 1382 he was also instrumental in replacing Queen Giovanna with Carlo III as king of Naples. He held extensive lands in Tuscany, the Papal States and the kingdom of Naples. A poet and patron of the arts, he was a friend of Petrarch and Boccaccio. He made his will on 14 February 1399, and died soon afterwards.
