Biography
The daughter of a carpetmaker, she became a servant in the house of Charles de Lalaing, Seigneur de Montigny, and his wife Jacqueline de Luxembourg. While in service in 1521, she caught the eye of Emperor Charles V and, in 1522, a daughter, Margaret, was born. Johanna received an annuity of Fl.80,- which was later raised to Fl.300,-. However, her daughter was brought up by the family Douwrin in Bruxelles. In 1525 Johanna married Johannes van der Duck and died on 15 December 1541.Endnotes
